ACCORDING TO THE REPORTER, TEN DAYS AFTER A VETERINARY SPAY PROCEDURE, THE PATIENT DEVELOPED A HERNIA THAT RESULTED IN ANOTHER SURGERY. THE PATIENT WAS RE-ANESTHETIZED. THERE WERE MORE ADHESIONS, INFLAMMATION, AND GRANULATION TISSUE THAN EXPECTED. THERE WAS ALSO PERMANENT TISSUE DAMAGE AS TISSUE HAD TO BE REMOVED ON EITHER SIDE OF THE INITIAL INCISION BECAUSE IT HAD STARTED TO GRANULATE IN. IT WAS NOTED THAT THE INCISION WAS EXTENDED.

  • MalfunctionApr 11, 2024Adverse Event Without Identified Device or Use Problem; Adverse Event Without Identified Device or Use Problem

ACCORDING TO THE REPORTER, AFTER A VETERINARY SPAY PROCEDURE, THE PATIENT CAME BACK DUE TO LEAKING URINE. THE SURGEON PALPATED AN ENLARGED UTERINE STUMP. A MULTICYSTIC ENLARGED STUMP WAS DETECTED BY ULTRASOUND WITH PULSATING VESSELS. THERE WAS ALSO BLEEDING INTO THE SURROUNDING GRANULATING TISSUE. MORE INFLAMMATION NEXT TO THE BLADDER WALL WAS IRRITATING TO THE BLADDER, CAUSING FREQUENT URINATION EVEN THOUGH NO INFECTION IN THE URINE WAS NOTED. THE ANIMAL ASSUMED A STRAINING POSTURE. THE DOCTOR ADVISED TO RESTRICT ACTIVITY, AND AVOID JUMPING, SO AS NOT TO IRRITATE THE STUMP FURTHER. ANTIBIOTICS HAVE ALSO STARTED TO REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF INFECTION FROM FOREIGN BODIES.

Patient problems: Cyst(s); Hemorrhage/Blood Loss/Bleeding; Inflammation; Urinary Incontinence

THERE WAS BLEEDING INTO THE GRANULOMATOUS STUMP. THE UTERINE STUMP TISSUE WAS INFLAMED RESULTING IN IRRITATION TO THE ADJACENT URINARY BLADDER. THERE WAS NO URINARY TRACT INFECTION. THE DOCTOR ADVISED THE PATIENT TO RESTRICT ACTIVITY AND AN ANTIBIOTIC WAS ALSO STARTED.

  • MalfunctionMar 7, 2023Patient-Device Incompatibility; Patient-Device Incompatibility

ACCORDING TO THE REPORTER, NINE DAYS POST-OPERATIVE OF A LINEAR AND UTERINE SPAY PROCEDURE WHERE THE SUTURE WAS USED TO CLOSE THE LINEA AND LIGATE THE UTERUS, THE CANINE PATIENT DEVELOPED AN INFECTION BETWEEN THE LINEA AND SUBCUTANEOUS TISSUE PER CYTOLOGY/CULTURE PERFORMED. THE PATIENT WAS TREATED WITH ANTIBIOTICS. 14 DAYS LATER, THE PATIENT WAS RETURNED FOR BLOODY VAGINAL DISCHARGE FOR TWO DAYS. THE PATIENT WAS STRAINING TO URINATE WITH NO EVIDENCE OF URINARY TRACT INFECTION (UTI) AND HAD SEVERE GRANULOMATOUS REACTION. THE PATIENT WAS TREATED WITH ANTIBIOTICS.

Patient problems: Abnormal Vaginal Discharge; Dysuria; Granuloma; Local Reaction; Unspecified Infection

  • MalfunctionMar 6, 2023Patient-Device Incompatibility; Patient-Device Incompatibility

ACCORDING TO THE REPORTER, ABOUT FIVE DAYS POSTOPERATIVE TO LIGATING THE UTERUS FOR SPAY, THE DOG HAD SEVERE GRANULOMATOUS REACTION. BLOODY VAGINAL DISCHARGE WAS NOTED. SEVEN TO FOURTEEN DAYS POSTOPERATIVELY, DISCHARGE PROGRESSED AND THERE WAS ALSO SIGNS OF STRAINING TO URINATE WITH NO EVIDENCE OF URINARY TRACT INFECTION. ULTRASOUND PERFORMED AND FOUND MODERATE STEATITIS AND SCANT CAUDAL PERITONEAL EFFUSION ADJACENT TO THE UTERINE STUMP. VAGINAL CULTURE WAS PERFORMED AND TREATED WITH FOUR WEEKS OF ANTIBIOTICS AND THE SYMPTOMS RESOLVED.
