Quick summary
This Siemens RAPIDPoint 500 is a point-of-care analyzer for blood gases, electrolytes, glucose, lactate and hemoglobin. Its 32 reports mostly describe results that didn't match other instruments, including wrong sodium, lactate and hemoglobin readings, plus software issues like results filed under the wrong patient's chart. One death and no injuries were reported. One open recall, from September 2023, says some drugs can falsely raise sodium readings and hide low sodium; the firm is still investigating.

There are potential drug interferences from Perhexiline Maleate or Atomoxetine Hydrochloride that may cause falsely elevated sodium results reported on the RAPIDPoint 500 and RAPIDPoint 500e Blood Gas Systems. The erroneous sodium levels with positive bias may lead to unrecognized hyponatremia and/or the inappropriate treatment of hypernatremia may lead to iatrogenic hyponatremia, resulted in a delay in patient diagnosis and optimal patient management.
